'Vampire Diaries': EP Julie Plec previews the season finale
The Vampire Diaries season finale doesn’t air until May 16, but the “Graduation” photos have arrived.
“It’s difficult to throw an event in Mystic Falls without it going catastrophically awry, but one of the things that was really important to us is that we do give this event itself its due,” says executive producer Julie Plec, who cowrote the episode with Caroline Dries. “We approached this episode, in its own way, like a series finale because our character’s graduating from high school is a shift in the show to open up a lot of new storytelling opportunities and new environments. So we really wanted to be able to get all the emotion out of this episode that we could before we move on to a different life. We made sure that in spite of everything that’s going on in the midst of it, we still get those great friendship moments and nostalgia moments that I, as a fan of TV over the decades, loved so much on high school shows as you reached that milestone.”
Will there be a death at graduation? “There will definitely be an altercation resulting in some blood loss, but that’s about all I can say,” Plec teases.
From the episode synopsis, we know that Mystic Falls will be “overrun with ghosts intent on settling old scores and fulfilling their supernatural destinies.” They’ll begin to appear in the May 9 episode, appropriate titled “The Walking Dead.” Says Plec, “Part of Silas’ plan to drop the veil — and Bonnie’s effort to either help him or stop him — they kind of blow up in everybody’s face in ‘The Walking Dead,’ and we get our first glimpses of what would happen if this veil fell completely. We start to have some ghosts coming through from the other side. It’s a nice collection of faces that will make us happy, and then some faces that we thought we probably shouldn’t see again because they’re up to no good.” (So they are technically ghosts? “It’s the same way we’ve done in the past when they break their way through from the other side, they have corporeal form,” Plec explains. “It’s just that if you kill them and the veil’s down, they can just walk right back through. So they’re kind of indestructible.”)
Someone will finally take the cure for vampirism in the finale. Plec won’t say whether the third time is a charm for Rebekah. “I will tell you that we started the season having firmly decided exactly who was gonna get the cure, and about halfway through the season, we changed our minds,” she says.
Plec also won’t spoil what Elena decides are her true feelings for each of the Salvatore Brothers, or whether Stefan will head out of town for the start of season 5 – something Paul Wesley has rooted for. “It all hinges on what, if any truth comes out of Elena and Elena’s situation,” Plec says. “Stefan has been pretty clear about being ready to move on. So the question is will he need to?” (We’re sure the shot of Damon above from the finale doesn’t influence Elena, at all).
We spoke to Plec before the most recent episode’s reveal that Hayley is pregnant with Klaus’ child, so we didn’t get to ask her whether Caroline will know the news by the time Klaus makes his surprise return (or if he’ll tell her). But when she told us, “I cried some really beautiful sad tears, and I cried some great happy tears as well” while writing the episode, we have to think the moment pictured (http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/i/2013/05/01/The-Vampire-Diaries-Finale-03.jpg) brought on the waterworks.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’: PAUL WESLEY DISHES ON STEFAN’S FUTURE
Executive producer Julie Plec confirms that someone will take the cure in the May 16 season finale, which Wesley would love to see be one of the core TVD players. “I like to think [next season] will maybe get a little less hectic and go back to some of the less complex days of just building character,” he says. “Maybe one of us ends up being a human, and we see how we all have to deal with that on a much more grounded level.” Plec also says that we will get an answer to whether the love Elena expressed for Damon is real. Is Wesley ready for that? “God, yes,” he says with a laugh. “I can’t imagine Elena ever definitively saying, ‘Oh, I’m not in love with you; it’s just Stefan,’ because then I think, where does the show go from there? But her intense feelings for Damon during the sire bond — I can’t imagine that they were true 110 percent. I’m curious myself what’s going to happen.”
After sharing a dance in the April 18 prom episode, Stefan will continue to ask himself for the rest of the season whether, if Elena were to want to come back to him, he’d say yes. “That’s not to say that it’s Who will she choose? all over again,” Plec says. “But there is the question of, where does her heart really lie? What is the truth? And what direction is the next phase of this love triangle going to go in?” The answer could be love square.
Even though Rebekah (Claire Holt) would leave Mystic Falls for New Orleans if the Originals spin-off gets picked up for The CW’s fall schedule, there’s still Candice Accola’s Caroline, who even No Humanity Elena has started shipping with Stefan. (She’s on Stefan’s dance card at the prom, too.) “I do think that when an audience vocalizes their like or dislike for something, it usually has an impact — in general, but specifically for this show,” Wesley says. “The audience is very loyal. We don’t necessarily give them what they want, but I notice that we definitely take things into consideration and toy with them, keep them on the hook,” he adds, laughing again. Plec doesn’t exactly rule it out: “All I’ll say on the matter is I’ve been shipping them since episode 2 of season 2, when Stefan took her in the bathroom and told her she is going to be okay. So if I’M shipping them,” Plec says, laughing herself, “then maybe one day it’s a road that we can travel down.”

'Vampire Diaries' Interview: Joseph Morgan Talks the Cure, Klaroline, & 'The Originals'
JustJaredJr.com: Let’s start off with Klaus and Caroline. We keep getting these moments between them where her feelings for him, friendship or otherwise, are sort of tested. Will she confront them soon or will they be in this sort of dance forever?
Joseph Morgan: I can tell you the relationship is complicated and continues to get more and more complicated, so I think at some point, she’ll have to.. she’s an assertive young woman, Caroline. I think at some point she’ll have to confront her feelings and they’ll have to be some sort of resolve or Klaus, as an impatient being, will force her to confront them. I think he’s one for ultimatums, so I think at some point they’ll be some sort of crescendo there. I think there will have to be. It’s certainly not my goal to frustrate people, just three seasons of the dancing around each other or something (laughs) and I don’t think the writers will want to do that anyway. But what’s happening is, their dynamic is evolving, even though it’s a dance.
JJJ: We have to ask you about those Klaus tears. We don’t see them often, but when we do, they are absolutely brilliant. Is that something that’s written in the script or is that your creative decision?
JM: No, I don’t think it’s written in the script. I don’t know, it’s just something I do I suppose. Sometimes I wonder if I do it too much (laughs). Like, am I showing too much vulnerability? I feel like they show so much aggression of his sociopathic, murderous side, it needs to be balanced out a little bit. And there is a vulnerable side to him. As a child, he was never loved enough and was resented, and indeed persecuted, by his father. So I think there are a lot of feelings underneath it all, for him, which tend to come out sometimes. I mean, the intentions and the motives are given to me by the writers and Julie, and I just try to put them across. Last [episode], as far as Klaus was concerned, was life and death, so I thought that was worthy of that level of emotion.
JJJ: When he does have those moments, it tends to be with certain people. We saw him get emotional with Mikael in season 3 and with Caroline this season. Since they aren’t confirmed for the spin-off, should we assume Klaus will be as evil as ever?
JM: You shouldn’t assume that neither of them are going to be in the spin-off because Mikael is dead and we have flashbacks. The show is called The Originals. There’s always a chance there will be some history that has to do with his father. [Point taken!] And secondly, we’ve been teased that there will be crossovers between the two shows, should we picked up, so I think certainly one a lot of people will be waiting for is to see Caroline show up with a suitcase in her hand. I don’t know. I would never say never.
But no, we’re not going to see him just be evil. I think what we’re going to see is certainly more screen time with Klaus. But the series itself centers around his character, so I think what we’ll see, if anything, if more sides of him. They will continue to flesh out the character and show more dynamic. The more other characters we bring into, the more we’ll see different dynamics and how he relates to different people. For me, the more I play with the character, the more scenes that are written, and the more the characters that are introduced or reintroduced into his life, the more there is for me to explore. We’ll see him react to it in a way that we’ve never seen him react before, just in the pilot. We’ll see something thrown at him that catches him right off guard. Again, it will open up that emotional world for him.
JJJ: We’re hearing a lot about the change in dynamic between Klaus and his brother Elijah in the spin-off. When will we see that shift start to happen?
JM: It’s ever-shifting, I think, since I daggered him at the end of season 2. Absolutely, it’s always evolving. And the thing that I love about Elijah, is I think he always feels that there is some possibility for redemption for Klaus. And I’d like to think that he’s right. But yeah, we’ll see that dynamic shift even during episode 19, and certainly during episode 20. Their potential roles in each others’ futures will be defined in those couple of episodes.
JJJ: What about Rebekah (Claire Holt)? It seems, at times, she wants to forgive Klaus and be a family, but he just keeps doing these terrible things to her. What can you tell us about what’s coming up for them?
JM: They both have reasons to want the cure right now. Klaus wants to get Silas off his back. And Rebekah wants to be human, to be loved, and to live a normal life. Their dynamic is tested as ever. Because their other living sibling holds the one thing that both of them need or want at the moment. I really think as well, that Rebekah really hasn’t truly forgiven Klaus for episode four this season where he used Stefan to betray her trust and then put her in a box for a couple of episodes. I think he really crossed the mark there. He crossed the mark at the end of the first episode as well when he told her, “You’re not my sister, you’re not my family, you’re nothing to me.” I think they are probably on the worst terms they’ve been in probably hundreds of years. They’re not seeing eye-to-eye right now.
JJJ: Klaus mentioned in the last episode that he isn’t exactly actively searching for Tyler (Michael Trevino), either because he’s too busy or really, for Caroline’s sake. Do you think he is capable of doing the same for his brother, where Katherine is concerned?
JM: I’ll tell you this: his brother is going to ask him to do that. I’ll tell you that much, but I’m not going to tell you how Klaus reacts to that.
JJJ: Fair enough! And lastly, Klaus and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) hooked up and we really haven’t seen her since. Was that a one-time deal and will it be addressed at some point?
JM: I think it was a one-time thing, but both characters are in the spin-off. We’ll see Hayley again in episode 420. And what it does do is complicate the dynamic between them because those characters now have a history. So it will be acknowledged, but I guess not addressed like it’s going be a “now they’re on, now they’re off.” I don’t think it will be addressed in that way. But it’s absolutely a part of their history together now and it’s something that complicates their dynamic even further.

Exclusive Interview: Charlie Bewley Previews His Role as Vaughn on The Vampire Diaries
When news broke out that Twilight Saga stud Charlie Bewley was trading in his fangs for stakes, fans gushed with utter excitement. A Voluturi vampire making his CW debut as a militant hunter on The Vampire Diaries? No. Freaking. Way. Be still our hearts!
Well, it’s safe to say that Charlie has already made quite an impression as Galen Vaughn, TVD’s freshest member of the infamous Five who resides on an island off the coast of Nova Scotia. He first appeared in Season 4, Episode 13 (“Into the Wild“) looking all dashing and hardcore in his LL Bean inspired duds and then in a single — SNAP – of Damon Salvatore’s neck, everyone realized this fella meant business.
So what’s on Vaughn’s mysterious agenda (aside from a bloody game of Torture the Salvatore)? We caught up with Charlie to get the exclusive scoop and, while he couldn’t spill all the delicious details about his TVD character, he regaled us with behind-the-scenes scoop and stories from set. He even teased major drama with the following shout-out to fans: “Looking forward for you guys to see Vaughn take Mystic Falls to the cleaners. Thanks!”

Alloy Entertainment: Congrats on your TVD role! Vaughn is described as “ruggedly handsome, charming, built, and tough as hell.” Those are quite formidable traits! What was the audition process like based on all of this?
Charlie Bewley: I hadn’t worked much on the audition. I went in there and just let them have it. Maybe my confidence in the room was due to Vaughn and I being similar people.
Alloy Entertainment: Were you a fan of The Vampire Diaries beforehand?
Charlie Bewley: I had never watched the show until I was cast – then I caught up and realized what I had gotten myself into.
Alloy Entertainment: Can you tell us a little bit about Vaughn and what brings him to Mystic Falls?
Charlie Bewley: I cannot — you’ll have to watch. [Hint hint.]
Alloy Entertainment: In a battle of wits and charm though, who would win: Klaus or Vaughn and why?
Charlie Bewley: Klaus is great! I enjoy Joseph’s portrayal of him and he fully deserves the spin-off. As for a Battle of Britain, I dunno… Let’s wait and see if we clash antlers in the future. It certainly would be great to stand toe-to-toe with JM.
Alloy Entertainment: Vaughn has a strong opinion when it comes to Delena on the show. But what’s your outlook on their relationship from what you’ve seen so far? What piece of love advice would you offer them?
Charlie Bewley: My outlook on relationships is not one you want to hear, but in the context of TVD I’ll say this: I cannot believe these two brothers toss around a girl they supposedly love, neither can I believe that Elena willfully hops into bed with one after the next, and back. Sire bond is no excuse.
Alloy Entertainment: What was it like filming scenes with Ian Somerhalder, Joseph Morgan, and the cast? Were there any entertaining behind-the-scenes moments on set?
Charlie Bewley: Ian is the glue that binds us all. He runs the show. It’s quite the spectacle. I love the guy — he has lots of great energy and is a real people person. TV is a new medium for me… these guys have been going at it for years. I feel privileged to have come in and injected my own brand of energy to Mystic Falls.
Alloy Entertainment: You portrayed a vampire in the Twilight saga. And now you’re a slayer. Moment of truth: Which do you have more fun playing and why?
Charlie Bewley: I am all about supernaturalism. My focus on a daily basis is to push evolution to its limits and there is nothing I believe is not possible. So naturally, to play a vampire with the abilities of Demetri was very special. Vaughn is like Bear Grylls on a vengeance mission – and everyone loves Bear. But Bear can’t fly. And Demetri can.
Alloy Entertainment: We’re really intrigued by your approach to your upcoming film, Thunder Road. You actually went on a two-month road trip with Matt Dallas and Steven Grayhm to conduct interviews with veterans. What did this experience teach you and what was the highlight of the entire trip?
Charlie Bewley: We learned how psychologically isolated the veteran community is and how oblivious most of us are to their experiences and ailments. It is our hope to bring what we saw and heard to the masses in THUNDER ROAD, which is currently undergoing rewrites. Highlights of the trip were packing four film-makers and two months worth of supplies into a Prius (kindly donated by Toyota Santa Monica) before cruising into L.A. and rolling up to the The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere in our snazzy wheels.
Alloy Entertainment: Your trailer for Hammer of the Gods looks epic! First of all, exactly how badass is Steinar? And second, how long did it take you to wield that sword like a champion?
Charlie Bewley: Thank you! Yes, ‘epic’ is the [right] word. I’m really looking forward to seeing it myself. This is the great thing about acting: you can bludgeon Saxons all morning, come back after lunch to get your own head kicked in and then have a nice bath to wipe off all the syrup in the evening. Steinar is my own hero version of myself. I love him.
Alloy Entertainment: Who are your top three favorite vampire features of all time?
Charlie Bewley: I would say New Moon, then Breaking Dawn Part 2 – Then Eclipse. Actually, I liked Eclipse the most. Umm. Actually. Hmm. So difficult to choose.
Alloy Entertainment: The Oscars are coming up — are you rooting for any actors or movies in particular?
Charlie Bewley: I love SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. It really is the kind of unhinged stuff that I see myself doing lots of in the future. Bradley Cooper is brilliant in it – as is De Niro. Jennifer Lawrence too. David O’Russell is a genius of course. If you’re a closet TVD fan, David, would you like to direct THUNDER ROAD? Please?
Alloy Entertainment: You’re not only a talented actor but a true philanthropist as well (which is beyond incredible) and are prepping for your second Ultramarathon! (Congrats!) How do you stay motivated throughout the training process?
Charlie Bewley: Actually, I gave up running to become a jumprope enthusiast. Motivation is bred by elevated stakes. I was able to run a disgusting distance because of the cause and on behalf of my late friend and stuntie Jocelyn Clarke, who past away two years ago on Valentine’s Day after taking on cancer for a year. What she went through compared in her treatment made the pain I ‘suffered’ during my race feel like an ant bite. ELEVATE THE STAKES OF YOUR LIFE AND YOU CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING. Love ya, Jos.
Alloy Entertainment: TVD is well known for its eclectic soundtrack and we see that you love to tweet recommendations. Are there any songs/artists that you can’t stop listening to?
Charlie Bewley: I love the Kooks – they are fun; Mumford & Sons. Skrillex is amazing. I love anything that’s honest. But really, my great love is trance music.
Alloy Entertainment: And — because we just have to know — what’s your most guilty pleasure?
Charlie Bewley: Guilty pleasure? Almond butter. Addicted. There are literally 10 different types on the craft trolley in Mystic Falls. If I go missing, I can usually be found hanging out there, like Pooh in a honey pot.
